I was born in a squat on Hazelrig road,
then I moved to Brixton when I was two years old,
I went to school near Brockwell park,
way before the synagogue became a car park
Back then the neighbourhood wasn’t quite as quiet
We lost a car in the Brixton riots,
it was flipped upside down and set on fire.
I watched from the window as the flames rose higher
I’m Brixton born and raised,
Latchkey taught me how to behave,
How to play backgammon, how to cheat at rummy,
To never back down and always land running.
I work a day shift cos i need to feed my kids,
I got a makeshift studio to drop ad libs
And if this may seem like fun and games well s**t
Life ain’t always what it seems is it ?
